The Tale Of Despereaux

As you can see, (or used to see) my blog page is The Tale Of Despereaux. Despereaux is a French name. It's pronounced Des-per-o. I got the book for Christmas. I am reading it, and my mom won't take me to the theaters 'til I read the whole thing! So far I liked it a lot. It's about a mouse that lived in a castle. One day his sister taught him to chew on paper at the library. He refused to chew and read the book that he was about to chew. The book was about a knight that saved a princess. So Despereaux heard some music in the next room and it attracted him to the next room. There he found the princess and the king playing music to her. He went to the king's foot and the king saw the mouse and said shoo. Despereaux immediently fell in love with the princess and the princess fell in love with him. Yes it's silly for a mouse to be in love with a princess but he did.

His sister snuck into the room and saw Despereaux on the king's foot. She whispered "Despereaux, Despereaux, come here." He refused again. The king kept saying shoo shoo. He finally came to his sister. "It's against the laws to be in sight of a human! Now you have to go to the mouse council".

At the mouse council the judge told him to sit at the front row. "Is it true that you sat on the king's foot?" "Yes", replied Despereaux. "I'm afraid you will have to get the red string of death." Despereaux gulped. He walked to the judge and a strange mouse came up to him with the red string of death in a wheelbarrow. "First we will have to measure your neck, you have an awfully small neck." So the strange mouse measured his neck. "Two inches." So he tied the red string of death around his neck.
The two black masked mice walked with him to the dungeon. Despereaux gulped again. The led him down to the dungeon. The two black masked mice walked up the staircase leaving Despereaux in the darkness. "Hello?", he said. "Hello", replied another voice. It was an awfully big voice. It must have been the biggest rat in the world. "Hello. I'm Gregory the jailor." "Oh good, it's a human. Not a rat." thought Despereaux. "Hey, you're a mouse. Not a rat." said Gregory. "Tell me your story. Get on my hand. " So there was Despereaux sitting on Gregory's hand telling him his story.

This was the first short story in the "The Tale of Despereaux". I have not read the rest of the short stories yet. The author is Kate DiCamillo. She also wrote "Because of Winn-Dixie". I am also halfway through that book. It's really good too.

This is a picture of Kate DiCamillo.
